- 1. Why do pavers make the "perfect walk or patio"?
Besides their wide range of sizes, shapes, and colors, pavers are ideal for freeze/thaw situations. The joints between the pavers allows for movement without cracking. if necessary they can be lifted individually and replaced easily for access to utilities. The compression strength for a paver is about 3 times greater than that of regular poured concrete, which is why it also makes a great driveway.
- 2. Will weeds grow between my pavers?
Weeds and grass may start to grow between your pavers over time. This is easily remedied by adding a product to your sand during installation, or by adding a pre-emergent granular weed killer into the joints. If they do appear, a spot vegetation killer can be used without causing damage to your pavers.
- 3. Can I install a paver over an existing concrete walk or porch?
Yes you can. While this is not the preferred way, pavers can be laid on top of existing concrete walks or patios as long as they are in good condition.
- 1. Is a footing required for a retaining wall system?
A traditional footing is not required. A compacted stone base of 4" to 6" is all you need for your retaining wall. Generally, the higher the wall the thicker the base, you do not need to dig down beneath the frost line.
- 2. How tall can a retaining wall be built?
Although this is usually only constructed in a commercial site, a segmented retaining wall can be built in excess of thirty feet. Most residential walls are no taller than five feet, most of them less for decorative purposes.
- 3. Can I have a wall for other applications other than steep grades in my yard or business?
Yes, absolutely. Walls are used very often as sitting areas along with a paver patio, or for a decorative privacy wall. A double sided wall is suggested for this application. Walls create a "cozy" effect and you can incorporate lighting to enhance their beauty.
- 1. How do I know how large my pond should be?
Depending on the area where you are going to place your pond, you should also keep in mind if you want fish and plants in your pond. Obviously the more fish and plants, the larger the pond.
- 2. How do I keep my pond clean?
A "pond filter" is necessary for recycling the water and preventing it from getting stagnant. Also, aquatic plants are great biological filters. The water that runs down the fall in your pond will oxygenate your pond water which is also important.
- 3. Can I have KOI in my pond?
Absolutely, KOI are extremely hardy and easy to keep. You should stop feeding them when the water temperature reaches around 50 degrees. During the cold months of winter they will hibernate and do not need to be fed.
